Controls
The controls are the classic MMO layout, near enough.
| Input | What it does |
|---|---|
| W / S (or ↑ / ↓) | Run forward, back (backwards is slower) |
| A / D (or ← / →) | Turn |
| Q / E | Strafe |
| Space | Jump |
| Shift (held) | Walk instead of run |
| Num Lock | Auto-run, until you take a step yourself |
| Right-drag | Turn the camera and steer the character; pressing it turns you to where the camera looks, and A / D strafe while it is held |
| Left-drag | Turn the camera only; once you let go and move, it swings back behind you |
| Left and right held together | Run forward, steering with the mouse |
| Middle button (held) | Run forward; drag it to steer as with the right button |
| Wheel | Zoom, smoothly, out to 112 m and in to first person, where your character is not shown |
| Wheel over the minimap | Zoom the minimap; a click on it opens the map. The plate at its foot gives where you stand, unless you turn Coordinates on the minimap off in the settings |
| Left-click | Select a creature, or a player you can fight, and start attacking it; any other player or pet becomes your heal target; empty ground lets go |
| Tab / Shift+Tab | Select the nearest creature or player you can fight in front of the camera, then the next nearest; those behind it come after everything in front. Only what is close and in sight counts: one hidden by rock, or on a ledge above or in a cave below, is passed over. Shift+Tab goes back along the same trail |
| 1–0, -, = | The hotbar: your class's ten actions, as you learn them, and any macros you drag onto it. Drag a slot onto another to swap the two; the bar keeps the order, and stays as it is while you fight. With nothing selected, an attack takes the nearest creature. Hold a key down and its slot fires again as soon as it is ready, so your main attack can be held through a fight; the pet and talent bars' keys do the same, and a potion key drinks once |
| Z / X / G | The priest's pet bar: Sic 'em, Beckon, and Dismiss or Call your pet |
| F | Talk, open a hoard, gather, go in at a dungeon's door or leave from its foyer, work a castle's winch or ballista; with a quest offer open, accept it; with a greeting open, take its first choice |
| C / B | Character sheet / backpack |
| L | Quest log |
| N | Skill tree |
| T | Talents |
| J | Collection: sets you have found whole |
| R | Runes: buy, name, bind and use them |
| K | Trade skills and the materials pouch |
| H | Drink your best healing potion |
| I | The dungeon finder: wait for a group for any dungeon, or teleport to its door |
| U | The jukebox: play any song of the soundtrack over the game's own, until you stop it |
| M | The map: below ground the level's plan first, then your zone, then the whole continent. Drag its right or bottom edge, or its corner, to size it; it keeps the size. Over a zone's map, its title gives the coordinates under the pointer |
| O | Show or hide the 3D map of the dungeon or castle you are in |
| Shift+M | Show or hide the zone map on the HUD |
| V | Hide or show every nameplate (also in the settings) |
| Enter or / | Chat |
| Escape | Close what is open; else stop fighting; else the menu |
| F1 | A diagram of the keyboard: every key that does something lit, with its action on it, and the action bar's keys saying what is in the slot. Hover a key for its full name |
The camera behaves as World of Warcraft's does. The pointer hides while a button turns the camera. When a wall or a hill comes between you and the camera it comes in at once, and eases back out once the view is clear. Camera following in the settings says when it swings back behind you by itself: Smart while you move, Always standing still too, Never only when you turn it. Lock the pointer while turning holds the pointer still, so a long turn never stops at the edge of the screen.
On a phone
Hold the phone sideways. A phone gets a screen of its own, laid out like a classic party RPG: the world in a window on the left, boxes beside and under it for where you are (or what you have selected), the chat log and your party, and a row of buttons along the bottom.
| Touch | What it does |
|---|---|
| Left thumb, lower left of the world | The stick: run the way you push it, from where the camera looks. Push it a little to walk |
| Drag a finger over the world | Look about |
| Pinch | Zoom |
| Tap the world | What a left-click does: attack a creature, talk to someone, open a hoard, gather |
| Tap someone in the party box | Make them your heal target |
| Jump · Use · Target · Potion, under the world | Jump; talk, open, gather or take a door (F); the nearest creature in front (Tab); drink a potion (H) |
| The bar, under the boxes | Your first six abilities as you learn them, each with its name; More holds the rest |
| Map · Bag · Menu | The map; your bag; and a menu of the character sheet, quests, skills, professions, collection, runes, the dungeon finder, the jukebox, objectives, chat, auto-run, nameplates and settings |
The game goes full screen the first time you touch it. The interface shrinks to fit the screen, and anything you open, such as the bag or the map, opens over it.
Swimming
Walk into a lake, a river's deep middle or the sea, and once the water is over your chest you swim. Stop and you tread water. You swim slower than you run and cannot jump, but you can fight as you would on land. Swim back to the shallows, or haul yourself out up a bank, to stand again. You can swim a little way out to sea, but not out of sight of land.
Your pet and your hirelings follow you in. Wild creatures will not: a chase stops at the water's edge, and only something that shoots can reach you there.
Ledges and caves
Rock juts out over some of the steeper drops. Walk out onto a ledge from the hill behind it, and off its lip to come down again, or shelter under it from below. Caves go into some of the hillsides: a cutting, a tunnel under the hill, and a chamber at the far end. It grows dark as you go in, and you carry a light. The camera keeps out of the rock, pulling in under a cave's roof or at a ledge's face. Creatures follow you onto a ledge from the hill behind it and into a cave, and nothing sees you through a cave's roof.
Lava
The Cinderwaste's volcano, the Smoking Mount, holds a lake of lava in its crater, and lava tubes wind up into its flanks with a stream of lava down one side and a pool of it at the end. Lava burns: step into it and it takes 20% of your health every second until you step out, or fall. Your pet and hirelings follow you in and burn as you do; nothing wild will follow you in, so a chase stops at its edge. Walk along the dry side of a tube. Steam drifts out of every tube's mouth, and fumaroles steam on the mountain and across the waste, the ground round them crusted yellow with sulphur.
Chat
The log has two tabs: General, for everything said and everything that happens, and Combat, for the fight — your blows and spells, hits you take, kills, and anything refused. A tab with something new on it you have not read carries a dot.
Enter opens the line under the chat log; Enter again says it, Escape throws it away. A line goes where the last one went, unless it starts with a command:
| Command | Who hears it |
|---|---|
| /s | Anyone near you |
| /y | Anyone further off |
| /p | Your party, wherever they are |
| /z | Everyone in your zone, and its dungeons |
| /g | Everyone in the world |
| /w name | That player alone. /r answers whoever whispered you last |
A say carries 30 m and a yell 150 m, within the place you stand in: nobody in a dungeon hears the zone above. A command on its own, with nothing after it, only changes where the next lines go. Speak more than 6 lines in 10 seconds and the next is refused until the oldest is that far behind you.
A few commands are not channels: /pvp on or /pvp off; /leave your party; /autoparty off to stop
being grouped; and for a party's leader, /lock, /unlock and /kick name. See PvP
and parties. /help lists every command.
Almost every key can be rebound under Key bindings in the menu, and each action can have two; F1 shows where
everything is now. The mouse's two
side buttons (Mouse 4 and Mouse 5) can be bound like any key. The potion bar's slots, over the experience bar, have no
keys until you give them some on the Potions tab; a click on one drinks it. Macros has no key either: open it
from the menu or with /macro.
Along the top of the screen a bar shows where you are, your coordinates, experience, coins, bag, how many are
playing, the frame rate and the time; click one to open the map, character sheet or bag, and right-click it to move,
label or hide it, or to hide the bar until the pointer reaches the top. A phone has no bar.
Over the frame-rate readout, the meter graphs the last half-minute of your fight a second at a time:
your damage as columns with your DPS over it, and your healing and the damage you take as lines, with the
fight's totals above; when the fight is over, the chat gives them too. Your pet's and hirelings' damage and healing count as yours.
Over the meter, the zone map shows the zone you are out in, with your arrow on it and, as you choose, where quests
are handed in, offered and found. Its Hand-ins, Offers and Objectives boxes appear in its title bar
while the pointer is over it and you are not fighting. The wheel zooms it, a drag pans it, and a double-click fits it
again. It is hidden below ground, where the 3D map shows the place, and Shift+M hides or shows it.
Edit HUD layout lets you move, resize or hide anything on the HUD, and share a layout with the rest of your
class. Its list holds your own layouts and a preset for every class, laid out for what that class watches; a
preset is laid over the layout you are arranging. Save keeps your changes in that layout, Save as new
makes another, and Revert goes back to what was last saved.
