Gathering
Herbs and trees grow out in the open in every zone, Spitehold's fields included, but never in a town or an outpost, or on a graveyard; herbs keep often to water. Ore veins grow only in caves, on their floors under the rock, so there is none in Spitehold: go into the hills for it. Each trains its own skill, Herbalism, Mining or Woodcutting, from 0 to 100, and the only way to train one is to use it. The Green Thumb talent makes each gather teach more.
Each skill has six tiers, each asking 15 more skill than the last. A zone grows the tiers that suit its creatures' levels, so copper and tin grow near the city and gold and mithril in the far north. The Wakelands, past every tier, grow only the highest: mithril, ironwood and frostlily.
What a node teaches you shrinks as your skill passes its requirement, and stops altogether 25 points past it. Node names are coloured by how much they still teach: red is beyond you, then orange, yellow and green, and grey once there is nothing left to learn. A Forager's Eye shows the names from 250 metres off for a while.
Nodes are shared. Whoever gets to one first has it, and it grows back after 2 minutes, or 30 seconds in Spitehold's fields, in the same place. Stand within 4 m of it, no more than 2.5 m above or below it and with nothing between you, and press F, or click it. A vein is mined from the cave's floor, not the hill over it. A node your skill is too low for cannot be gathered at all. A gather gives you one or two herbs, one to three ore, or two to four logs (one more under a Keen Harvest, and sometimes one more with Bountiful), and you must wait 1.5 s before the next. An ore vein gives up a gem of its tier besides its ore 12% of the time (always, after a Prospect), Agate out of copper up to Diamond out of mithril: jewelcrafting sets them, and armorsmithing and weaponsmithing set a few.
Cloth is not gathered and takes no skill. Humanoids drop it: 50% of the time in the wilds, 60% below ground, and every time from a warden or a boss. Which cloth depends on the creature's level, except that demons wear Felweave and the lesser dead Grave Wrappings. It is what sewing makes cloth armour from.
Hides are not gathered either. Beasts leave them as humanoids leave cloth, as often: every kind of wolf, rats, Puglins, dinosaurs, frogs, Yetis, hares, foxes, badgers, wild boars, feral dogs, wildcats and adders, a hide for their level, except that a Yeti or Frost Wolf of level 7 or more leaves Frostfur and a dragon Dragonscale. They are what leatherworking works.
Everything you gather goes into the materials pouch (K), not your bag. See materials.
