The Riven Isle
The Riven Isle lies off the map, out in the sea: no border leads there. It is an island about two kilometres across, for levels 8 to 11, with sea cliffs round it, downs and woods inside them, a river, a farm, a quarry and a castle, and Saltgate, its outpost, at the landing on the southern shore. Roads run from Saltgate to the castle and the quarry.
What sets it apart is that the rock is riddled through:
- Caves open on the hillsides and the cliffs and wander back under the land, some branching, some crossing under each other. You walk in at one mouth and out of another, though some come out high in a cliff. It is dark inside away from the mouths, and you carry a light. The zone map marks every mouth with a dark arch. Ore veins grow only in the caves, on their floors.
- The Sink, near the middle of the isle, drops into a great cavern. Passages climb out of it to the surface.
- Natural arches stand over the open ground and ledges jut from the steeper slopes, with room to walk under both and to stand on top of them.
A roof between you and a creature blocks its sight and its shots, as a hill does, and creatures follow you into the caves. Saltgate's people have work for you, ending with a call into the Sea Throat, the sea cave whose door stands on the eastern cliffs. A second dungeon, the Blowhole Crypt, has its door in the Blowholes. If you die, you wake at Gullcry Graves or Stormcairn Graves, whichever is nearer.
